SUPERVISOR READY
TOOLKIT
ABOUT THE TOOLKIT
The Skills for Success – Supervisor Ready Toolkit is a comprehensive and carefully curated collection of resources specifically designed to prepare learners for the challenges and demands of food production supervisory positions. We understand that transitioning into a supervisory role can be both exciting and intimidating. While promotions occur due to exemplary dedication, talent, and experience, it takes time to adjust and develop the required skills for new responsibilities.
The purpose of this toolkit is to help remove the anxiety and stress associated with workplace promotions by providing learners and assessors with the necessary tools to learn, practice, and master the supervisory skills needed in food and beverage processing facilities.
The toolkit outlines two roles for its process:
the Learner, and the Assessor.
The Learner is the employee preparing to assume a Food Production Supervisor position, while the Assessor is an experienced supervisor or manager guiding and mentoring the Learner’s development.
The collaboration between Learners and Assessors is fundamental to the success in preparing individuals for supervisory roles in food and beverage manufacturing:

LEARNER
The Learner refers to an employee who has been selected for promotion to a Food Production Supervisor position within their current facility.
The primary goal of the Learner is to develop and enhance the necessary supervisory skills required for their new role as a Food Production Supervisor. They are the main beneficiaries of the toolkit's resources, activities, and training materials.

ASSESSOR
The Assessor refers to an experienced and respected Supervisor or Manager within the food and beverage manufacturing facility.
Assessors play a crucial role in supporting and evaluating the skills development of the Learners. They act as mentors and guides, providing guidance and feedback as Learners transition into their new supervisory roles.
TOOLKIT RESOURCES:
The toolkit is organized into three resource types : Preparing to Supervise, Learning to Supervise, and Assessing Your Supervisory Skills. Each resource type is carefully designed to cater to the specific needs of learners and assessors, providing a comprehensive framework for skill development and growth.
PREPARING TO SUPERVISE RESOURCES
Preparing to Supervise resources, help learners to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. They can use Skills for Success Self-Assessments to gain insights into skills for success such as adaptability, communication, collaboration, digital literacy, reading, writing, numeracy, problem-solving, creativity, and innovation. Additionally, Skills for Success Pre-Learnings for numeracy, and reading are available to determine learners’ current skill levels in these areas.
LEARNING TO SUPERVISE RESOURCES
Learning to Supervise resources focus on developing supervisory skills through various tools and the guidance of experienced assessors. Learners can collaborate with assessors to create personalized training plans, focusing on building upon their existing skills foundation. The Learning and Performance Record serves as a valuable tool for tracking progress and development. Skills for Success Practical Activities provide learners with hands-on opportunities to practice and apply their recently acquired supervisory skills in a safe and controlled environment. We also recommend exploring online courses offered by Food Processing Skills Canada (FPSC) to further enhance the skills required for effective supervision.
ASSESSING YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS RESOURCES
The Assessing Your Supervisory Skills resource is for learners who are actively performing their supervisory roles, but continuing on their learning journey. Ongoing mentoring and peer support play a crucial role in the learners’ growth and development as supervisors. The completed Learning and Performance Record provides a snapshot of learners’ progress, showcasing their strengths and areas for ongoing enhancement. As an assessment option, learners may choose to undertake a Multiple Choice Exam that evaluates their readiness across various skills for success areas.
